2010 Events Recap

As our 20th anniversary year draws to a close, the KLT Board of Directors and Staff would like to thank all of our loyal members who have made it possible for KLT to protect the beautiful lands of Kansas!

Our summer events season provided the opportunity for KLT members to truly experience our protected properties in unique and refreshing ways. We offered the following special opportunities to "get out on the land," and more fully and personally experience the inherent power and beauty of the Kansas landscape:

Manhattan Member Appreciation Reception

On Sunday, February 6th, 2011, KLT members spent a convivial afternoon at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Manhattan. Following a reception featuring chili and Tallgrass Brewery beer, KLT Director of Land Protection Jerry Jost gave a slide lecture showing member dollars at work. Volunteer awards and an auction of the Baby Elephant Folio edition of Audubon's Birds of North America wrapped up the festive afternoon.

Member Appreciation Reception & Talk by Don Worster

On October 3rd, 2010, our members were treated to an inspiring and thought-provoking lecture & slide show, America's Breadbasket and Our Changing Climate, by prize-winning, twice Pulitzer-nominated author Donald Worster. A reception and the talk were followed by member-volunteer awards and the auction of Baby Elephant Folio edition of Audubon's Birds of North America.

Earles Easement Dedication

Ralph & Roma Earles had folks out to their land to mark the permanent protection of their enchanting Baldwin Woods property. A brief ceremony preceded a tour of the Fall Equinox's early evening sky led by naturalist and amateur astronomer Rex Powell.

Akin Prairie Wildflower Walk

Our perennially popular wildflower walk on the Akin Prairie was conducted this year on June 23rd by KLT founding member Dr. Kelly Kindscher, author of Edible Wild Plants of the Prairie and Medicinal Plants of the Prairie. Even if you missed the walk, you are still welcome to visit the Akin Prairie any time during daylight hours.

Volunteer Easement Steward Workshop

This June 26th workshop familiarized potentials volunteer stewards with KLT's current easements and the responsibilities of KLT's stewardship role. Field activites were conducted on the Lichtwardt Easement. If you missed the training but are interested in becoming a steward, please contact Jerry at jjost@klt.org or call 785-749-3297.

Yoga and Tai Chi on the Solstice

yogaKLT started the summer off in a unique way on the Hollowell Easement overlooking Clinton Lake -- with a yoga session led by respected yogini Alice Steuerwald and a serene hour of Tai Chi led by David Hann. See photos and read about the event on WellCommons Forum for Community Health.

Instructor bios:

Alice Steuerwald’s passion for body and spirit healing was sparked at age 16, when she worked as a restorative aide in a nursing home. After studying to become a strength trainer and body worker, Alice expanded her skills by traveling to Central America to learn spiritual healing techniques. She has combined this knowledge with principles of yoga in her sessions. Alice’s classes at the Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence Athletic Club, and the BeMoved Studio introduce students to pranayama, strength training, micro-movement, and a variety of yoga styles.

Lawrence native David Hann first took up Tai Chi in 1997 and has been teaching both short and long forms of Tai Chi for nine years. He has periodically demonstrated the short form at the Chinese New Year programs at KU and has shown the sword form of this discipline at the Johnson County Public Library. David also leads Tai Chi practices in the South Park Gazebo on Monday mornings. For David, “Inhaling the fragrance of the flowers while doing Tai Chi is a great way to ease into the day.”
